Help the next generations of Texans learn that Don’t mess with Texas® means don’t litter. Lesson plans and an activity book are FREE to download and utilize for teachers and parents with students in Pre-K through high school.

LESSON PLANS

These thoughtful and engaging lessons, weaving in persuasive writing, science and citizenship, help young Texans learn about trash in their communities and how to take steps to keep their schools and neighborhoods clean.

Objective: By the time the students complete the lesson plan, they will have learned the difference between litter and non-litter, have a better understanding of how litter affects our environment and create an in-classroom commercial. This lesson is suggested to be taught during science class.

  • Five-day lesson plan with 20-minute lessons each

Objective: By this lesson’s end, students will know how to recognize various types of litter, understand what litter does to the environment and know that they can help keep their school and home clean. At the end of the lesson, students will create their own Don’t mess with Texas campaign to help combat litter at their school. It is suggested that lessons be taught during the science block.

Objective: By the end of the lesson, students will have brainstormed ideas for combating litter on campus, selected the best idea and completed a multi paragraph, persuasive letter to a key figure at their school (i.e., the principal, parent organization or janitor) with their proposal. It is suggested that these lessons be taught during ELA or writing class.

Objective: By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify why combating litter in Texas is important, develop ideas to help keep Texas litter-free and write persuasively to political or business leaders in Texas who can help implement their ideas. It is suggested that these lessons be taught during Composition I.
